Sitting in a Chair (2019)
My practice stands between historical interrogation, personal experience, and trajectories of contemporary art. I am interested in the complex overlaps and fleshy folds, where the "political" person and "personal" person meet, merge, and overlay. My work concerns itself with performative actions and methodologies that construct our engagement with objects. This exploration is humorous and probing, has feminist tendencies, and seeks to organize and condense a vast array of passions and emotions. Trying to construct or unveil a logic to my work, much like writing or editing history, creates the potential for humor and failure to coexist.
Sitting in a Chair, for example, is an installation with a sculptural and video-based element. In the video, I sit in/through/on the chair in question. A cast of my leg emerges from the same chair in the gallery space. The work speaks to how women's bodies are typically consumed in art and playfully interrogate those assumptions while exploring questions about objecthood. By using an armchair that alludes to domestic space, the work offers a study of interiority, and the flesh like tones of the fabric also suggest desire.
