Optimism (2012)
Date: August 2012
Mixed materials/ site specific installation
Dimensions: Variable
Optimism is a visual and kinetic experiment. The intervention occurred in front of the building where the artist shares her studio. In close proximity to garbage bins and within an overgrown garden, the artist made use of the gathering refuse and other elements from her personal repertoire (disco balls, immersible lights and a bubble machine) to re-present what was already there. Intermittently, the brown rabbit sitting amongst the foliage quivers and begins to sing Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. Light plays off various elements of the installation as the day moves into dusk. Transformative yet subtle, the work speaks to survivalist instincts without using "us verses them" rhetoric.
Produced for participation in the Art Spin visit August 30th 2012. " Art Spin is a multi-disciplinary art crawl style bicycle tour of galleries (commercial, artist run & public), art performances, site-specific installations and visits to artist’s studios throughout various downtown Toronto neighbourhoods."
