Three Weeks in Quarantine (Shell Scene and Fountain Scene) 2020

Project with Ottawa Public Art

For Microcosms, I created two videos depicting interior and exterior architectural details from around the Rideau - Vanier ward. The videos are tightly framed and cropped, and feature interventions from my body. The main sites of exploration are a radiator in my apartment, three "pillars" on their sides between apartment complexes, and the fountain in Strathcona park. Using my body as a conduit, I guide a dialogue between a public fountain and a radiator.  Outside symbolic interpretation, the natural shell becomes ornamental with the radiator, contrasting the iron shell at the base of the fountain. The videos may offer other 'clues' to situate what (and where) actions are taking place. The performative elements contribute to a sense of ambiguity and displacement. While we recognize similarities in each video (shells, iron, columns), the videos are not mirrors of each other but are part of a conversation.

Both videos Excerpt Shell Scene and Excerpt Fountain Scene were projected in a storefront window in Ottawa's Byward Market, as part of the Microcosm pivot initiatives with the City of Ottawa's Public Art Department.

These video are extracted from the series Three Weeks in Quarantine (2020).
