Instant Gratification
This interactive artwork has a
compelling relationship with Marshall McLuhan’s notion of “tools
as extensions of our senses.” The question arises, then, what
senses do our tools extend, and what reactions do they provoke? The
phone acts as an extension of our voice and our mouth, and the
particular sex toy used in this installation is meant to mimic the
tongue to provide sexual pleasure. In a sense both tools in this
artwork are capable of doing such. This artwork echoes Work to
Text and general Barthian analysis by exploring interactivity
as a means of engagement and active readership. This artwork concerns
itself with the methodology of seduction. In fact, the artwork
operates backwards to what is perceived as the normal model: a word
being used to control the tongue muscle is the reverse of what is
physically happening. Perhaps this piece is more reflective of the
elements of desire at play.
